It may be easy to feel lost with all the social recommendation sites out there, let alone the social networking sites, but social recommendation is an important part of growing your client base.

A Tale Of Two Filmmakers: Making A Social Network Do the Work

Where once the film world was divided into two clear lines – Big Money Hollywood, and the Independent others – now a new team of filmmakers have arrived. Where starting filmmakers had to negotiate with studios to fund their project, two bold films turned things around, and have changed the face of the industry forever.

“The Age of Stupid,” a film about climate change set to open in September, was paid for by the filmmakers, themselves and their backers: the 220 people who heard about the movie through their informal contacts and social networks. Through them, “Team Stupid” managed to solicit donations ranging from £500 to £35,000 from each of the donors. Each of those who contributed raised the £450,000 budget of the movie, funding equipment, production and the staff and crew who worked for wages far less than market rates.

When I first saw the advertisements to advertise on Facebook, I’ll admit I wasn’t all that enthused. Facebook is free—why on Earth would I start paying for it now? Despite my personal resistance to spending money (on really anything), the fact is more and more organizations are spending on social advertising. Check out this article on Facebook Advertising by Mashable.com’s Benn Parr. It has some pretty good information and even a report from Borrell Associates regarding social media spending and projections for 2009.

After shooting the breeze with a friend of mine in the marketing industry, he mentioned that he was using Facebook ads for some of his clients—and it was driving a considerable amount of traffic to their websites. My lack of enthusiasm transformed into curiosity, and I begin to grill him about the process. Not only did it sound simple—but pretty effective. Here’s why I’m now a fan of advertising on Facebook:

If you travel a lot, or find yourself using your smartphone every second you’re away from a computer, then you’ve probably realized you can use your phone to access social media. While there are many smartphones out there to choose from, none are as revolutionary as the iPhone. If you’ve managed to resist obtaining one up until this point, the recent introduction of Apple’s latest model, the 3GS could possibly be the last nail in the coffin of your defense.

This year’s Twiistup was set to not only provide a fun, exciting mixer where entrepreneurs and social media lovers could dance the night away, but it was the first time that the conference branched out into a two day event focused on providing valuable content to the young internet entrepreneur.  The SocialMediaMarketing.com team was the first on the scene to capture the event, talk with the showcasing entrepreneurs, and meet with Hollywood and Social Media legends like Brooke Burke and Brian Solis.

Okay so if you don’t know much about social media you aren’t really a dummy, it’s just a gimmicky title that gets the point across. I personally always appreciate a refresher on the basics so consider this Social Media 101.

Why Should I Bother?
Social networking is a contagious, unavoidable phenomenon that doesn’t stop at socialization. More and more organizations are leveraging these sites to effectively market themselves. This isn’t news to you because clearly you don’t operate your business from a cave (unless your business is spelunking, then of course there would be nothing wrong with that). Whether you find social networking to be daunting or consider it to be a key component to your marketing plan—we can assist you in getting the most out of your efforts.

Social Media is another way to communicate our entity or brand to the rest of the world in a way that’s unlike traditional media.

There’s a conversational element to social networking. The web is uncensored and open to everyone’s ideas, creations and opinions which opens up opportunity for expansion and awareness of your brand as well as implementation of marketing that is both effective and impactful.

We have the ability to connect to our clients and potential followers on a level that cannot be touched with traditional marketing.

We can recieve and give instant feedback and content to one another. That kind of return rate is incredible.

With networks like Flickr we can post and expose our product or design for instant feedback and sharing amongst others. Within social networking, you can take a product, service or brand to the masses at a rapid level. When one post, tweet, or video is posted, it can immediately be shared, reblogged, tweeted or emailed to someone.

The potential snowballing effect is massive.
