You’re active on Twitter, have a blog going, are developing your company’s LinkedIn page all while being ‘fan’-ed on Facebook. You’ve learned the social media ropes, but how do you manage it all day-to-day?

It’s not only time consuming to visit each social network page, but also inefficient. Luckily, there are several options once you learn some social media functions. The social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) can be accessed and maintained through third party applications.

Recently I wrote a blog post reviewing David Meerman Scott’s “New Rules of Marketing and PR” – in it, David implores his readers that every company can find value in this world of Social Media and that EVERY SINGLE COMPANY, without question, should be tapping into the online community to enhance the buyer experience.

The post brought up an interesting debate and throughout, we kept getting caught up in the semantics of the term “Social Media”. What does it mean? What does it encompass? Why should every company be using it?

If I can tell you one thing I’ve learned by being a part of social media, it’s that by going global- I’ve become more local.

The bloggers and social media enthusists I began following long (months) ago brought me into communities and groups in my own backyard. One way I learned about organized groups, conversations and chats was through the simple art of using and following Twitter hashtags.

In the first piece we looked at a few ways to get your events listed on popular event sharing sites to optimize the events visibility. In this post we are going to look at a few ways to promote your event and interact with the participants before they are blown away at your event. Let’s jump right in.

Create a Hashtag

The easiest way to track activities online about your event is to use a universal hashtag for your event. This hashtag can be used on Twitter, within Flickr photos and even on blog posts with the tags area. Using a hashtag you can set up searches on Twitter Search, Google Alerts and other services to be notified when someone is talking about your event. It also allows your guests to track conversations about your event to see what is going on, get updates and other notifications.

The key to launching and a successful social media effort is being as prepared as possible prior to execution. This means to be prepared in the sense of:

  1. A communications plan–the integrated approach and circle of influence and messaging
  2. Schedule of social media updates and the focus of the updates–determine what is going to be said and when
  3. A response plan for negative and positive comments based on the campaign and any difficulties, which are encountered–you will always receive both types of feedback for numerous reasons
  4. Monitoring, tracking and reporting–need to know consumer sentiment and how things are going from a ROI standpoint

One element, which often seems lacking is the response plan…So let’s focus on the response plan and the best way to prepare.

5 Reasons Why People Join Facebook

When I was a freshman in college, Facebook was what all the ‘cool’ kids were doing. Both in class and out, you could always spot someone updating their Facebook wall or checking out what their friends were gonna do later that week. Since then, Facebook has grown in both size and influence and is joined by Twitter as one of the top social networking sites today.

With the number of registered users growing by the thousands every month, a great question to ask yourself is “why did you join Facebook?” We all have our reasons, but here are 5 reasons why you may have:

1. Peer Pressure

One of the biggest reasons why people join Facebook is because their friends are on it already. Many people that I have spoken to don’t want to use Facebook, yet they feel the need to be on it to stay in touch with their friends.
