5 Tips To Becoming A Twitter Rockstar

January 21st, 2010 by | 1 Comment

You may have never graced the Billboard Top 100 or even have a musical bone in you, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be a Twitter rockstar. You may not have the your own talk show like Ellen DeGeneres (aka @TheEllenShow) or championship rings like Shaquille O’neal (aka @The_Real_Shaq), but you can still make a name for yourself among the Twitter elite.

With hundreds of opinions on how to ‘properly’ use Twitter, it’s hard to figure out whose right. Follow everyone or follow no one? Tweet everyday or tweet every other day? It’s still too early to see whose right and whose wrong, but here are 5 tips that can help you become a Twitter rockstar.

1. Sharing Is Caring

As the popular saying goes, “Sharing is Caring,” and on Twitter, this is a great way to build up a community around you.

By sharing and retweeting content that is interesting and also has attention-worthy value, you can build a solid foundation to your ‘online brand’ by being someone who provides value to the community.

A great way to start is to pay attention to users like Guy Kawasaki who will regularly tweet out useful and interesting articles on a daily basis. Also be sure to pay attention to what sources users like Guy visit as these sites typically provide great value to the community.

2. Don’t Use Your 5th Grade Yearbook Photo

This is a basic, yet highly overlooked area on Twitter. One of the first things that a user will look at is your profile picture. While you may not see your photo as being a big part of the community interaction on Twitter, the best way to think of it is as your personal logo. Similar to how Pepsi or Coca-Cola wouldn’t use a grainy photo of their logo on Twitter, you shouldn’t either.

3. Don’t Overdo It

So now that you have built up a small community, how will you keep them engaged?

One of the biggest mistakes that causes users to stop following you is to update your Twitter too much. By this I am referring to sending out 10 updates in time span of a minute. While at first glance there might not be anything wrong with it, the problem becomes that for the person following you, you have flooded there Twitter feed as it’s only showing your updates.

4. Who Are You On Twitter?

@VegasBill — The person to talk to about Las Vegas, @Percival — The Founder of Lalawag, @iJustine — YouTube ‘celeb,’ how about you? What are you known for? This is something that everyone hopes for: an identity. Early on, branding yourself for success begins with knowing what you want to be known for and then working toward being that expert or guru in that market or niche.

5. Have Fun

Yup, plain and simple. Have fun. While you may be using Twitter as a networking tool for your professional relationships, it is important to remember that Twitter is meant to be fun. Have a funny story? Share it with your ‘friends’ on Twitter. Trust me, everyone loves to have fun.
