Believe it or not, not everyone is enthusiastic when it comes to social media. While there are those who preach about how great social media sites Facebook and Twitter are, the truth remains that there will always be a group that is just plain bored of it.
Just how there are those that don’t understand how people can eat cereal with no milk for example, there are those that just don’t get what’s the big deal with social media. Still, here are a few things that may help convince those bored with social media, that it can in fact be fun.
Games and Applications
While social media sites are typically associated with meeting new people and networking, games and applications are in fact a large part of the experience. Similar to how the iPhone’s appeal is in part to the great applications available, developers have built applications specifically geared toward the Facebook and Twitter platform. Games like Typing Maniac and Bejeweled Blitz for Facebook have a huge fan base, and on Twitter, Foursquare has continued to grow in popularity.
Part of the appeal of games like these is that you can interact with your friends as well as with the applications community as a whole. With high-scores and bragging rights on the line, it’s no wonder that applications are where users spend a bulk of their time.
Becoming a Fan
Another aspect of social media that takes being a ‘fan’ to the next level is the ability to become a fan of your favorite brand, company, or person on Facebook. Facebook even takes it a step further and allows anyone to create there own ‘fan page.’ From your favorite foods to even your love for the color green, you can find a fan page for just about everything you like.
On Twitter, not only can you follow your favorite “celebrity,” but you can also interact with them. A perfect example of this is how the average Joe can get a shout out from Shaq or even get mentioned by Alyssa Milano in an update. Taking down the corporate walls, Twitter is like a community with no locks. You can interact with just about anyone at anytime. Want to know what Bill Gates is thinking? Just head over to his Twitter. Want to see what iJustine has to say about the iPad? Send her a tweet. It’s that simple.
How Are You Using It?
If you’re still bored of social media, one last question that may be able to help solve this is to determine how you are using it. For some, business is the main reason for signing up for an account on Facebook or Twitter, while for others it was just to try it out. In either case, it is important to make sure you are using social media the right way. Social media is meant to be engaging. If you are just ‘going through the motions,’ you are not using social media to its full extent. Take the time to check out applications and tools that can make using social media fun. Also be sure to see if any of your friends are on social networks. It’s always more fun when you know people already on it!
