Will Google Buzz Become Relevant?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Gravity Summit where I had the chance to learn about how business professionals were using social media. Among the many topics that were discussed at the summit, one topic in particular was brought up on a few occasions. That topic was Google Buzz. For many professionals in attendance, the question they wanted to know was whether or not Google Buzz would become relevant. As it is, Facebook and Twitter are big question marks for some businesses because of the simple fact that companies don’t want to jump too far into something if there is a chance it will disappear in a year or two.

So the question now is what do you do? If you are a business owner or a marketing professional, how will Google Buzz play into your campaigns?

Where Do You Get Your Ideas?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

When it comes to social media and content, one of the questions you may want to ask yourself is where you get your ideas from. While it may seem like an easy enough question to answer, the truth is that where we get our ideas from has a big impact in the direction we go with our social media campaigns. For some of us, coming up with new ideas means looking at what other companies and brands are doing and ‘changing’ it to work for us. There is nothing wrong with this approach, but one must always remember that the most effective campaigns aren’t those that modify existing ones, but rather those that create brand new ones.

How Social Media Is Changing Google Search Results

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

When people talk about the ways social media has changed the business world, the most common response is the way it has changed marketing and advertising campaigns. No longer is it ‘enough’ to have TV and print advertisements. To be effective, being part of the social media environment is becoming almost mandatory. Still, one area that social media is slowly becoming more and more relevant in are search results.

Gone are the days of simplicity and in are ‘social circles.’ If someone within your social circle has written something about what you are searching for, it will most likely show up as one of your results on Google.

How Fast Are You Going?

How Fast Are You Going

In the marketing world, minutes could mean millions of dollars lost or saved. Commercials during the Superbowl which typically run in the millions can equal a large brand boost, or a complete failure. As the saying goes, “time is money.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. Keeping this in mind, not only is being part of the social media landscape becoming a growing sentiment, but how fast a company engages in it is also of importance.

While it may seem that everyone company has a Twitter, Facebook and MySpace account, every company is at different stages of their social media campaigns. From the bare minimum to the full-on community engagement, each situation calls for a different ‘gear.’

Is Social Media Just A Phase?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Social Media

The other day I was asked if social media was just a ‘phase.’ This was not the first time I had heard the question and it is one that deserves some discussion. As companies continue to reassess their current marketing and branding campaigns, the question of how much to allocate toward social media campaigns is becoming a bigger issue. Not only is cost being taken into account when companies review social media, but also how it will affect their branding as well as customer relationships.

What Is The Trend?

While more and more companies begin engaging their online communities through social media, the question is how much will they increase by in the coming year. According to Forrester, they predicts that interactive marketing will have a 16% compound annual growth rate through 2014. Additionally, according to research reported by Ravit Lichtenberg, “48% of Marketing and PR moving money out of advertising into social media with only 18% moving money out of PR.” This is significant because this will be the first time that more money is being taken out of advertising budgets than in PR.

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Believe it or not, not everyone is enthusiastic when it comes to social media. While there are those who preach about how great social media sites Facebook and Twitter are, the truth remains that there will always be a group that is just plain bored of it.

Just how there are those that don’t understand how people can eat cereal with no milk for example, there are those that just don’t get what’s the big deal with social media. Still, here are a few things that may help convince those bored with social media, that it can in fact be fun.

5 Reasons Why People Join Facebook

5 Reasons Why People Join Facebook

When I was a freshman in college, Facebook was what all the ‘cool’ kids were doing. Both in class and out, you could always spot someone updating their Facebook wall or checking out what their friends were gonna do later that week. Since then, Facebook has grown in both size and influence and is joined by Twitter as one of the top social networking sites today.

With the number of registered users growing by the thousands every month, a great question to ask yourself is “why did you join Facebook?” We all have our reasons, but here are 5 reasons why you may have:

1. Peer Pressure

One of the biggest reasons why people join Facebook is because their friends are on it already. Many people that I have spoken to don’t want to use Facebook, yet they feel the need to be on it to stay in touch with their friends. For some, it is more convenience than recreation, but either way, Facebook has become as mentioned earlier, a sort of “cool kids club” type atmosphere.
