Level the Social Media Playing Field

There is a lot of talk, and I mean a LOT, about this idea of “Social Media experts” – people who are the best at what they do, cultivating community, encouraging discussion, setting goals and benchmarks, measuring metrics and ROI – you know, the Chris Brogan’s and Gary Vaynerchuk of the world.

The question is, how did these guys become experts so quickly in a field that is so extremely new to the world? In reality, all of these guys aren’t that different from you and I – You can be just as much of an expert as the next guy.

Business Blogging: Should everyone be on Board?

In 2009 we saw a surge amongst businesses out there with their use of blogging and Social Media. Companies are quickly realizing the power of Social Media and blogging with it’s ability to communicate directly with customers and clients – providing a direct line of conversation with the “outside world” and allowing other people to give instant feedback, for better or worse, and communicate that feedback with virtually everyone in the world who will listen.

In short, it’s a very powerful communication tool, which is why we’re seeing the invention of “Community Managers” and “Social Media Marketing” positions on the rise. Businesses are realizing that this kind of communication takes real time and develop – like any relationship, open communication and most importantly, trust, doesn’t develop overnight.

The Importance of Stepping Outside Your Social Media “Circle”

Social Media is a wonderful thing. The Internet is making the world a much smaller place and allowing us to connect with like minded people from literally all over the world. Last week I Skyped with someone in Paris, chatted with a friend in Argentina, and planned a Wii party with a buddy in Chicago – people would have scoffed at the idea a few years ago.

But as wide a net as can be cast through the use of Social Media and blogging, we still often find that our communities are not as big as they seem. We look to meet a wide range of people but somehow, we still end up developing small cliques and social groups  – and while there’s nothing wrong with this, when you settle in and become overly content with one specific group, you’re closing you’re mind to a whole word of learning possibilities and potential.

You don’t need me to tell you that Twitter and Social Media networks in general are a great way to meet new people, make friends in your area, find potential clients, and make connections.

Back in July I packed my things and left my home-town of Nashville, TN to embark on the next step in life’s journey which just so happened to be in the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois. This move had me facing several obstacles to overcome, the primary one being the struggle to find a job in a new city where I didn’t know anyone during a recession. Talk about a challenge.
