In order to successfully tread through the online marketing space, brands seeking to expand their reach online will need to find the tools that can empower their strategies. And once you get on board the social networks and utilities, it’ll be essential to also develop your own processes to maximize their features to help you achieve your goals. And among many other components, timing is crucial in social media marketing because you’ll need to be able to reach as many people as possible. And for this, Bitly posted the approximate best times to post on three of the most popular social media sites today.

Bitly has been tracking metrics like the main types of content being shared across a social network, and the geographic locations of the people who shared and are viewing the content, among many others. And in a blog post, the link shortening service crunched the numbers and showed the projected best times to share content on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr.

“Recently, we’ve been exploring how content propagates (or “goes viral”) through social networks, particularly how the day and time something is posted affects the eventual amount of attention it will receive.” according to the blog post.

Each of the plots are based on EST, and showcases the amount of traffic the site gets on any given day. The darker blocks on the first plots show the times with the most traffic, and when sites are most active. However, despite these indications, it should be noted that while knowing these can help bring posts to more people, a well executed strategy will get their attention.

  • Twitter
For Twitter, the plots show that the afternoons earlier in the weekday are the best times to attain high click counts; particularly around 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, from Monday to Thursday. Brands should avoid posting past 8:00 pm, and especially after 3:00 pm on a Friday as these are the times that Twitter traffic drops.
  • Facebook
Links posted on Facebook from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm get the highest average click throughs, while those posted past 8:00 pm and before 8:00 am will have a tougher time to get noticed and clicked. The weekends also prove to be practically be dead for Twitter traffic, so it’s best to keep all the tweeting and content/link distribution within the week.
  • Tumblr
Unlike Twitter and Facebook, Fridays on Tumblr is rather busy. Traffic peaks at 4:00 pm onwards during the weekdays, with the hours between 7:00 and 10:00 pm proving to be the best times to post content on the social media site. Sundays at these same time show about the same amount of site activity.
