Google Giving Love To Your Social Networth

For those of you that Google on the regular (sometimes I can Google hundreds of keywords a day when researching for posts, looking for local issues or just browsing), you have noticed the evolution of Google search results pages.

What started as 10 webpages that were relevant to your search term once evolved to include ads, aka Google AdWords.

The evolution continued as people started to pay more (much more) attention to things like pictures, videos, blogs, news sites, press releases and ultimately real time social media interactions.

Let’s look at the above the fold piece of a search for Barack Obama:

You will see at the top the latest news stories and press releases that are related to the president. This is relevant to people that want to know the latest happenings with the president and not his website or an associated search result.

As you move down you can see BarackObama.com and the WhiteHouse.gov as “old school” search results. Directly following are real time results that mention the president. This can include Tweets, news stories, blog posts and anything else that is happening right now. This is an important issue with search engines as they evolve and why you need to be creating fresh content as often as possible. As content gets stale, others will write fresh relevant content and nab up seachers attention.

Let’s continue to below the fold:

You will see more typical web pages (there are still 10 of these somehow), however you will see plenty of company from social media sites that take up prime real estate on the 1st page of search results.

The first list of unusual results comes from your social circle. This is something you need to pay close attention to. Google defines your social circle as:

…the network of connections Google uses to identify relevant social search results. It is based on a combination of the following:

  • Direct connections from your Google chat buddies and contacts
  • Direct connections from links listed on your Google profile  such as Twitter and FriendFeed
  • Secondary connections  that are publicly associated with your direct connections

In addition to web pages from your social circle, posts from your Google Reader subscriptions may also appear in your social search results.

So your online network is more important than ever. Let’s run an example:

If you are a music marketer, and you have a large amount of bands that are following you on Google, through chat, GMail and other Google properties and they begin a search for ideas about music marketing, in addition to the search results they will see on the home page, they will know also see results from people in their network, thus people they trust and know. This gives you a higher opportunity to get the coveted clicks off Google searches.

Let’s continue on Barack’s search results. After the social results you will see listings for Google Books, something that authors can really capitalize on.

Finishing up the page are photos related to the president. These are images that Google spiders from all over the web, from web pages to photo sharing sites, all based off relevancy, titles, alt text and other factors.

What This Means To You

Really there is much to still learn about Google’s new search results page. What search terms will give you which social results? How they determine your social networth and what posts to display? Which Tweets and news stories are the most relevant to display?

What your focus needs to be on is creating awesome and engaging content. If you write posts that people want to read, Google will increase your quality score, give you better positions, you will attract more links and be more inclined to rank better.

Some things are out of your control, however the information on your site is yours to display for the world to see.
