With over a million advertisers and 25 million brands now on Instagram, the latest tool to undergo testing by the photo- and video-sharing app will surprise few. A new feature for faster shopping within the app has recently been rolled out to select users. Instagram will let you enter your payment details, as well as a PIN for added security.

Users with the new tool will find it in their profile settings under “payment settings”. After the user has finished setting up, he can use the feature to make advance payments for business establishments like salons. Shoppers can also view a record of all the purchases they made through the app. Instagram has confirmed the trial and says that in the future, the feature can be used for other services like booking movie tickets.

While Instagram already offers shopping opportunities to its users via tagged items shown in images, making a purchase currently entails shoppers to navigate to a pop-out image and completing various steps and entering payment details for every new merchant.

The new in-app feature will keep users within Instagram instead of possibly losing them while making payments via the merchant’s system. With their payment details already stored in the app, native payments pave the way for fewer purchasing steps and a more seamless shopping experience for users.

In March last year, Instagram signaled its plan to allow bookings for services directly from business profiles, but at the time said nothing about in-app payments. But now that the trial is up and running, it might not be too long before it’s rolled out to all users, brands and businesses included.

Instagram reports that more than 80% of its 800 million-plus users follow a business on the app. Knowing this, the Facebook-owned company will be keen to extend its shopping services to draw in more advertisers and boost its revenue even further.
