MySpace Launches Events & Calendar Platform

April 16th, 2010 by | 2 Comments

Despite Facebook’s reign over the social network tubes, MySpace is still in the running, propagating its use by releasing new features (albeit gradual and far between) while putting considerable focus on its more significant and worthwhile thrust as a launch pad for new talents and media entities with their artist profiles. This week, we see yet another feature added to its belt with MySpace Events. This, the social network announced via their press site.

MySpace Events is a new platform for global events set to benefit both users and artists with a grocery list of tools for creating, discovering, sharing and managing events that range from concerts, arts festivals, sporting activities and parties among others.

“Our users already post millions of events to MySpace each year and the events platform is the next step in enabling them to discover, create and socialize around the events that are most relevant to them,” said Jason Hirschhorn, co-president of MySpace. “MySpace Events allows users to find events of every size from a local concert to the next Lakers game to Jay-Z’s tour and then takes it a step further by providing the option to easily share the event and even purchase tickets.”

Aside from being able to help organize a deep catalogue of pop culture events, artist profiles will also be further refined to offer users a way for purchasing tickets to these events. Additionally, when a user RSVPs a yes to any particular event, it will be automatically shared with their friends.

“This provides MySpace a new revenue opportunity and supports our goal of being a top destination where people discover music and concerts.” said the official announcement adding that as of writing, the social network already has nearly one million concerts listed in the 2010 events calendar.

These events, along with the user’s specified Facebook events will also be accessible within MySpace through integration with Facebook Connect. The same implementation will also be available for sharing events across Twitter and TinyUrl.

In line with this, MySpace Events will also open for advertising where interested promoters can purchase a new special ad format for sponsored events from within the social calendar.
