Social Media Tools Are Literally Cropping Up Like-Flies?

flychat

Could iPhone’s Fly Chat application be the latest and greatest in social networking? Flychat is a social application for the iPhone and has a pretty cool concept. You can send messages and friend invites via a yellow fly (the app literally has flies buzzing around your screen), to people in your city, country or even the world. Green flies on your screen are incoming messages and can be from anyone anywhere, red flies are messages from your friends. Receiving messages is as easy as clicking on the flies or you can open your inbox to view them all.

The application also enables you to customize the content you receive with categories and themes. When sending out “flies” you can choose a category in order for it to be delivered to people who have specifically chosen an interest in those topics.

My Flies

Rather than read about Fly Chat alone, I decided to download the app myself (I’m willing to throw away $1.99 in the name of research) and report back on my findings. I quickly began sending and receiving flies. The majority of my incoming flies appeared to be experimentation. Sort of like yelling “hello” into a cave to hear your own voice bounce back:

Fly #1: Don’t be a stranger
Fly #2: Wasssup!
Fly #3: What up? Just checking out what’s on here! Hit me back!
Fly #4: Inappropriate content
Fly #5: Lmfao
Fly #6: I’m new to this…Be nice hehe
Fly #7: Hello????
Fly #8: In the market for my first Fly Chat friend, what do you have to offer?
Fly #9: Trying to pass sum time with sum interesting girls
Fly #10: Professional graphic design at low price! Logos, business cards, invitations, posters

Finally!

Interesting…but Useful?

While I had some interesting exchanges with a few of the nine flies prior (and questioning them about what they thought about the app), Fly #10 was using this app for business making 10% of the flies I received with Fly Chat relatively useful. While this doesn’t seem like very good odds, I feel as though it’s promising.

My conclusion with Fly Chat is that it has potential in the social media marketing world. While right at this moment there doesn’t seem to be enough users to make it a successful business tool; should the application catch on like other popular social networking sites—Fly Chat could very well be an excellent way to send a message the whole world can see.
