As Google continues to take over the tech world and dominate your online activity, Google strives to emphasize the importance of social interactions and relevancy. One way they are doing this is through the Google social search function.
When typing a search term into your Google browser, your search will yield sponsored links, pay-per-click sites, organic results and toward the bottom,”Results from people in your social circle.”
The other day I was logged in to my gmail account and searched “online coupons” and noticed A Thrifty Mom appeared at the bottom of my search. Turns out Sarah Barrand, the author of A Thrifty Mom, and I are connected via Twitter and therefore, she is a part of my social circle and her site popped up. Immediately I thought “one more reason why every company needs a social campaign.”
How does it work? Basically, whatever information you link to your gmail account and Google profile, Google registers as connections and part of your social network and searches through them when you engage in a term search. So if you are connected to your local pizza place via Twitter and you are searching for a pizza place in the area, the local pizza shop might not have an awesomely optimized site, but it might show up as a search result as part of your social circle. Pretty interesting, huh?
So not only do companies need a social campaign (duh!), they need a strategic social presence to get the biggest bang for their buck! The more social you are and the better your online strategy, the more likely your message will reach your relevant and intended audiences.
