Negative Nancy? That’s kind of a panzy term isn’t it? Well I guess, but I’m not really that upset with Apple, at least not as much as others out there – namely Adobe, Lala fans, those still waiting for iPads, those still boycotting AT&T to get an iPhone and the entire music industry who was forced to liveby the iTunes standard of $.99 music.

With the ubiquity of the internet came opportunities galore for marketers, but artists, musicians, writers, and other content producers have been met with equally as many challenges. Perhaps because the availability of copyrighted content has been disputed and challenged for over a decade already, musicians have blazed the trail for leveraging new technologies and bucking the system. Artists on Myspace proved that you no longer have to be spotted by an agent at an open mic night or a local show to get signed. John Mayer has taken to connecting with his fans almost constantly via Twitter (for better or for worse…) and the Jonas Brothers have offered themselves up for three-on-one video chats on Chat Roulette. These savvy artists have embraced digital media, particularly social media, and are being rewarded for it. But they’re certainly not alone. Working in the music industry sure has its fun moments, celebrity signtings and big ideas that can reach millions of people emotionally – something that really can impact sales and long-term commitment to a brand. Though they are looked at as rock stars or people that have everything going for them, they have made some pretty big mistakes when it comes to social media. I thought today we could look at some ways that the music industry has mismanaged social media and how you can learn from them.

Ghost Tweeting

This one may sound either ridiculous or brilliant, but for those looking to build authenticity and transparency in their brand, ghost tweeting is a big social media no-no. Essentially ghost tweeting is having someone, possibly an agency or a PR firm send out Tweets on your behalf. This is a misleading practice and something that brands should turn a cold shoulder to.
