Twitter’s scope and apparent usefulness has expanded it from being a twee method to tell your friends what you had for lunch to a crucial messaging and marketing tool. However, while most businesses will either require their employees to use the service to distribute links and spread news regarding their brands or are lenient enough to allow its use in the office, many others still view it as a mere distraction.

Employers who understand the power a tweet may wield, also recognize its potential as a cause of many security threats and shady under-the-table information disclosures. Thus, the IT department’s blocking efforts to keep the company’s computers Twitter-free are understandable.

Twitter Acquires Tweetie for iPhone

Twitter’s popularity has spawned an industry of its own. Made up of people who found great value in the real-time microblog, we’ve seen its influence generating an entire slew of third-party aggregators, status trackers and metrics monitors across various platforms and even spilling over to merchandise like shirts and cupcakes.

And it must really be something if Twitter recognizes one such entity, especially if they decide to pursue acquisition as it did recently with the iPhone client Tweetie.
