Twitter scam exploits Doctor Who actress’ name

Yesterday, the people behind the sci-fi show Doctor Who used Twitter to unveil a handful of announcements about their upcoming season. And like wildfire, every tweet they send out coursed through the Twitterverse and crossed over to other social networks like Facebooks, Tumblr and Pinterest. Quite naturally, this blitzkrieg-esque flood of attention to a specific topic not only caused them to trend worldwide, but they also attracted malicious activities to flock the social media giant. One in particular exploited the name of actress Jenna-Louis Coleman, the latest companion to the show’s protagonist.

Twitter acquires microblogging service Posterous

Social media giant Twitter earlier that it has acquired microblogging service Posterous in a move that will see the technology and the people responsible for developing them move into Twitter HQ. This was announced on both companies’ blogs as an “acqui-hire” to pull in software engineers and product managers and other employees into Twitterhood and refine the features already within the Twitter stable.

Gowalla finally laid to rest

We bid Gowalla adieu

Among the breakout applications that came out of SXSW, Gowalla was one of two services that spearheaded the so-called geolocation phenom in 2010. That year was touted as the Year of Location, with thousands of users signing up with it and its fellow frontrunner Foursquare, checking into countless establishments, earning badges and sharing these with their friends across different social media platforms. And just like any promising fledgling in the social/mobile space, Gowalla caught the eye of the larger entities, got picked up, and got wolfed down by Facebook.
