Formulating SMM strategies is no longer an afterthought for many companies and organizations. Every major brand out there has established its presence across various social media platforms, and they are proactively creating SMM campaigns to increase brand awareness and customer engagement.

Healthcare is one of the industries that have lagged behind in terms of recognizing the importance of taking the leap into social media. This may be attributed to companies’ fear of how online marketing campaigns may affect patient privacy, medical ethics codes, and compliance with regulations such as HIPAA. However, what most companies don’t realize is that these concerns can easily be addressed and shouldn’t stand in the way of building a strong online presence.

There’s a strong tendency for healthcare companies to come off as impersonal and a bit sterile, which is ideal when relaying test results or talking about the cleanliness of your facility and equipment, but not so much when communicating with patients and the public. Using social media is a great way to give your company a voice by humanizing your organization and responding to customer reviews and inquiries.

Social media is also a great way to positively impact patients and raise awareness about public health issues. Take last year’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, for example. With over 17 million video uploads and 10 billion views, it became the world’s biggest social media phenomenon and was hugely successful in its efforts of raising awareness and funds to find treatments and a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Knowledge is power, and social media is a great way to give your audience information they can’t get elsewhere. The sky’s the limit here—host a live Q&A on Twitter, blog about cutting-edge surgical procedures, or publish and share video tutorials, product demos for healthcare equipment, medical research, or even infographics with fitness tips and exercises for health-conscious individuals. From here you can build your own voice, start engaging with your audience, and continue reaping the rewards for years to come.
