A lot of online marketing strategies deal with how a brand, or business can optimize their presence on the social Web to present to the world what they have to offer. And under all these campaigns, tactics, and strategic planning lies great content. It’s the content that can generate traffic and raise its exposure online, and is heavily instrumental in delivering the brand’s news to its targeted demographic.
To be able to successfully carry out the brand’s message, it is the content writer’s responsibility to transform the message into a written piece. And not just any content piece, it needs to be both compelling for the readers to digest, and sufficiently informative to empower their decision-making. While the technical side may vary from writer to writer, here are a handful of best practices that can help writers produce content that can truly resonate with their target readers.
Plan Your Content Ahead of Time
Planning your content before you start writing will definitely help a lot in the entire creation process. This will help guide you in coming up with a solid written piece for your site. With it, you’ll have a structure to your writing process that will take into consideration a lot of components like your writing voice, the things you’ll be covering in your piece, the keywords to target, etc. This way, you can focus on the actual writing process instead of worrying about what to write about every morning. Here, an editorial calendar will prove to be very useful in planning your content months ahead and maybe even aligning topics to special events. An outline, on the other hand, will make sure you can create well structured content every time.
Study Your Topics
Needless to say: Never start writing without understanding your topic. The problem with some Web sites today is that their content offers no value at all because they’re not saying anything important, because their writers barely know what to say. And so we end up with content written almost half-heatedly, with barely anything intelligent to say, no valuable facts to impart, and whatever small data they have is cycled repeatedly—all just to be able to have somewhere to use keywords. This can kill your reputation online, and turn away any followers you may have. To prevent this from happening, writers will need to arm themselves with plenty of research, conduct interviews and experiments for themselves, and even read up on other related topics.
Think Like Your Readers
To be able to come up with great topics and transmute those ideas into content, it will also help a bunch to think like your readers. Doing so will help you understand what they care about, what inherently interests them, and what they’ll need to learn. This way, you can write content that is uniquely catered for your targeted readers that will capture their attention, keep them engaged with your brand on your site (and on the social networks), and will provide valuable advice for them along the way.
