Tool Time: Pinstagram

May 3rd, 2012 by | 2 Comments

Instagram is currently the most popular photography app on both the iOS and Android sides of the mobile market. Pinterest is one of the hottest breakout content sharing services on the social Web. Two friends in the San Francisco Bay Area thought it was funny to mash these two great services, but amusingly ended up with a really cool product they aptly christened Pinstagram.

Pinstagram began as a joke between friends Pek Pongpaet and Brandon Leonardo, two developers that soon found themselves spending their weekend playing with APIs and development tools. The two-day hack-a-thon turned out to be quite successful for the duo, as Pinstagram has been getting a lot of positive response from people online.

In a nutshell, Pinstagram presents a Pinterest-like interface for viewing, managing, and sharing Instagram photos online. If you’ve been using the photography app then you know this is actually a great idea, given that Instagram doesn’t actually have anything to offer when it comes to viewing and navigating through your photos on the Web—they seemed to have focused mostly on their Web experience. Go to their site and all you’ll get is a bunch of setting options, support links from its dev team, and ways to download the app to your mobile devices.

And while the joke most likely included the resulting tongue-in-cheek nomenclature, Pinterest interface seems to have the perfect coat of interface Instagram should be painted with.

For the most part, Pinterest’s design DNA makes Pinstagram completely idiot-proof, with large photos, and social engagements readily accessible upon mouse-over.

The Web service will prompt you to log into with your Instagram credentials, which immediately loads up your feed. On top of the page, you’ll find buttons for refreshing the feed, viewing popular photos, and those you’ve liked.

Every photo is posted and organized ala Pinterest pin minus boards, complete with the image owner’s username, description, when it was posted, and the number of Likes and Comments it has received. Mouse on over and you’ll see the familiar trio of buttons; Comment and Like will reflect directly on your Instagram images, while Pin will cross-post the image onto any board on Pinterest.

Even with all these good features that make Instagram more Web-friendly, Pinstagram is still a working progress. As such, more features should be expected soon, with apps expressly for the Mac and the iPad currently in the works.
