Twitter Promoted accounts and tweets head for mobile

Two years after launching Promoted Tweets, social media giant Twitter is finally bringing their brand of advertising and marketing solutions to its mobile platform with the latest updates to its mobile apps. These updates will then usher in the Promoted Tweets to the apps for the iPhone and the Android within the coming weeks, according to an announcement posted by on the Twitter Blog.

“It has been nearly two years since we introduced Promoted Tweets, the first in our suite of Promoted Products.” said the announcement. “In that time, people around the world have increasingly accessed Twitter from a mobile device. Today, we are taking an important next step in making our Promoted Products available to those users.”

As of writing, mobile users have been seeing Promoted Products appear on the interface. These include Promoted Trends which has been in the social microblogging service’s search component on both Web and mobile app interfaces; and Promoted Accounts on the mobile Web’s timeline.

Twitter's Promoted Accounts to Roll-out for Mobile Apps

The recent updates make Promoted Accounts more visible for those using Twitter’s official iOS and Android apps. And as mentioned, we should be expecting their roll-out in these apps’ timeline. An initial small number of users being able to see them near the top of their timelines from the brands they already follow, making sure they see the important tweets from the brands and people they care about.

Both products will feature the same experience for Promoted Accounts as it is on Twitter.com. Furthermore, according to the post:

  • Promoted Tweets will appear in your timeline like any other Tweet, and like regular Tweets, they will appear in your timeline just once; as you scroll, the Promoted Tweet will flow with the rest of the Tweets in your timeline.
  • As with Promoted Tweets in search, we will only display Promoted Tweets in the timeline when they are relevant. If you see a Promoted Tweet that isn’t relevant to you, you can easily dismiss it from your timeline with a single swipe.
  • Promoted Accounts appear in your list of Who to Follow recommendations.

“We’ve had a simple philosophy since we first launched ads on Twitter, and it’s this: We strive to create products that put users first, and continue to enrich your Twitter experience. Today’s news represents another important step in our advertising efforts, and we hope you like it.”
